Diesel engines were originally only used as stationary engines. Robert Bosch recognized their high efficiency for motor vehicles early on, but they had great difficulty starting when cold. Operators had to preheat the engines with hot bulbs, soldering torches or open fires. In 1922, Bosch launched the first glow plug for heavy oil engines, which shifted the preheating to the inside of the combustion chamber. Today, Bosch glow plugs enable a cold start in under two seconds.
Glow plugs then and now
Historic and modern glow plugs have evolved considerably. In the past, simple components were used; today, glow tubes protect the heating coil from combustion gases and ensure mechanical stability. Modern glow plugs are designed for on-board voltage, which makes series resistors obsolete. New technologies such as the dual-coil design have further improved efficiency.
